ArcGIS Solutions introduces an improved migration experience to Utility Network Foundation solutions

By Mike Miller

The latest ArcGIS Solutions release introduces updates and enhancements that improve functionality and usability of our Utility Network Foundation solutions. These updates simplify migration, reduce costs, and provide organizations with the tools they need for a successful transition to the utility network.

This blog explores the following updates:

  • Improved migration experience
  • Updated Utility Network Package Tools

Improved migration experience

The latest release includes several enhancements for a more seamless and efficient migration experience by organizations transitioning to the utility network. These enhancements are facilitated by the Utility Data Management Support toolbox, which provides a range of tools for configuration, reporting, administration, and migration.

Here are some of the key tools introduced in this release:

  • Create Simple Data Mapping—Simplifies the process of mapping asset groups and asset types by generating an Excel spreadsheet that allows you to easily define the mapping relationships between the source and target data.
  • Create Migration Workspace—Creates a data loading workspace that is compatible with ArcGIS Pro’s Data Loading tools, streamlining the migration process by automatically extending the schema, copying fields and attribute domains from the source to the target, and preparing the workspace for data loading.
  • Copy Fields and Domains—Enables the copying of fields and attribute domains from multiple FeatureClasses/Tables to another FeatureClass/Table, simplifying the process of transferring data attributes and ensures consistency across the utility network.
  • Create Utility Network Copy Workbook—Creates an Excel workbook that contains the properties of source and target Asset Packages, helping you easily map asset groups, asset types, and network properties into the Target Asset Package. (This functionality is particularly useful when migrating components of the Expanded data model to the Essential data model.)
  • Apply Utility Network Copy Workbook—Adds the Asset Group/Types listed in the workbook from the source Asset Package to the target Asset Package, ensuring that the target Asset Package includes all the necessary asset groups and types for a successful migration.

These tools simplify the process of configuring, reporting, and migrating data to the utility network, reducing the time and effort required for a successful transition.

Updated Utility Network Package Tools

The Utility Network Package Tools have also been updated with this release, providing a convenient and efficient way to work with utility network data models in an Asset Package format. Now, you can easily convert an Asset Package to a utility network or create a new utility network from an existing package.

Also in this release, we have introduced an option that allows you to create a version 6 utility network in addition to the current version 7. Previously, the version of the utility network created with these tools was tied to the version of the ArcGIS Pro client running the tools. This update provides flexibility for organizations that may be using different versions of ArcGIS Pro or have specific requirements for their utility network version. By offering the option to create a version 6 utility network, we ensure compatibility and support for a wider range of environments.

Conclusion

The inclusion of new migration tools in Utility Network Foundation solutions provides organizations with a specialized set of tools for mapping source data and expanding the model to meet their specific requirements. By offering a toolset specifically designed for migrating to the utility network, organizations can save time and streamline the migration process, resulting in cost and time savings.
