Modernizing Aviation with GIS: The 2025 European Working Group in Madrid

By Dylan Molnar

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) play a crucial role in modernizing aviation by enhancing data origination and sharing, improving navigation, and ensuring efficient operations. Esri is excited to host the 2025 European (EU) Aviation GIS Working Group in Madrid on March 25-26. Building on the success of 2024, which brought together professionals from over 40 organizations and 20 countries, this year’s event will feature presentations from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Avinor, Boeing, and others on how they address key challenges in the aviation industry.

The 2025 European Aviation GIS Working Group will have presentations from European thought leaders addressing the following topics:

  • The role of GIS in System Wide Information Management (SWIM)/Common Project One (CP1) initiatives to enhance data sharing and communication within the aviation sector.
  • Integrating GIS for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and Unmanned Aircraft System Traffic Management (UTM) initiatives to ensure safe and efficient drone operations.
  • Highlight the advancements in digital charting technologies that improve the accuracy and accessibility of aeronautical information and alignment to EU regulations.
  • Exploring the intersection of GIS and Artificial Technology (AI) technologies to drive innovation and efficiency in aviation.

This event in Madrid will provide an opportunity to hear from professionals on how GIS supports data chain objectives for the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and European states. Participants can engage with peers, share experiences, and learn about current advancements in GIS technology shaping the future of aviation.
The 2025 European Aviation GIS Working Group is part of an Aviation GIS Working Group series where we aim to bring Aviation GIS professionals together. We plan to host additional working groups in other regions, including South America and the Middle East.
