Developer & Technology Summit 2025: Creating the Digital Twin of Zürich, Switzerland

By Amy Niessen

During the Developer & Technology Summit 2025, Jim McKinney presented the ArcGIS StoryMap, “Creating the Digital Twin of Zürich, Switzerland”, created by Gert Van Maren, as part of his presentation on 3D GIS and Living Digital Twins.

Spatial digital twins are rapidly gaining significance in today’s technology-driven world, becoming a focal point in discussions about urban planning, infrastructure management, and environmental sustainability. As cities grow and evolve, the need for accurate, real-time representations of physical spaces has never been more critical. These digital replicas enable stakeholders to visualize, analyze, and simulate various scenarios, leading to more informed decision-making.

Many organizations are interested in building their own digital twin of the city, campus, facility, construction site, mining operation, windfarm, etc.

This story explores how the Digital Twin of Zürich in Switzerland was created and how it can be leveraged through various applications.

If one is using a web map with “Exclusive Visibility” group(s) in Field Maps, be sure to turn on visibility of the group’s layers, and don’t turn visibility off for the layer currently chosen. Seems like this would be pretty easy to fix by… Read more »

Agreed. It’s now almost March 2025 and this problem in Field maps app persists, generally rendering any map with exclusive viz of layers set in a group NOT an option for any scaled mobile applications. Please address this BUG.

Hi Jim, Will, Thank you for bringing this to our attention. This appears to be an issue on the current released version of Field Maps on iOS. However, it does seem that the problem does not persist on the next generation of Field Maps on the updated Maps SDK engine. This new version of Field Maps is aiming for a release in either the summer or fall of this year. Please reach out to us at arcgisfieldmaps@esri.com if you have any further questions about this issue. I encourage you to reach out to Technical Support and get a public bug… Read more »
