Redlands, California—Exemplary use of GIS by organizations around the world was celebrated at the 38th Esri User Conference, being held in San Diego, California. Esri, the global leader in location intelligence, acknowledged transformative work from worldwide users of its technology, with the Innovation in GIS, Enterprise GIS, Leadership in Government, Making a Difference, and President’s Awards. On Thursday, July 12, the Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award will be presented.
Award winners announced at yesterday’s Senior Executive Summit, and at today’s Plenary Session included the following:
- Innovation in GIS Award—Public Authority for Civil Information, Kuwait
- Enterprise GIS Award—SoCalGas and San Diego Gas & Electric
- Leadership in Government Award—Governor John Hickenlooper, State of Colorado
- Making a Difference Award—Math, Science, and Technology Magnet Academy at Roosevelt High School in Los Angeles, California
- President’s Award—American Red Cross
“This year’s winners have all, in their own way, used GIS technology in innovative ways to reveal hidden insights about the critical geography around them,” said Jack Dangermond, Esri founder and president. “The work our awardees are doing enables Esri to demonstrate how implementing location intelligence can help improve the ways that organizations—from national governments to small businesses—operate.”
The Storytelling with Maps Awards also recognized the top entries from the Esri Storytelling with Maps Contest. Participants submitted multimedia narratives—filled with dynamic maps, descriptive text, videos, and compelling images—in Esri Story Maps apps. The grand prize for best overall story map this year went to the Mapping Unit of the UN refugee agency UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees) for the Rohingya Refugee Emergency at a Glance app.
Finally, the SAG Award will be presented to organizations from around the world to show appreciation for their use of spatial analytics technology to solve some of the world’s toughest challenges. One hundred eighty institutions are being acknowledged this year in fields such as local government, agriculture, environmental analysis, emergency response, retail, and water management for demonstrating what’s next in location intelligence innovation.
