Dong Energy Optimizes Operational Intelligence with Esri and OSIsoft Software Integration

Redlands, California—Esri, the world leader in geospatial technology, and OSIsoft, a global leader in operational intelligence, today announced the official release of PI Integrator for Esri ArcGIS. The new integrator delivers an out-of-the-box solution that allows real-time data streams from sensors deployed throughout operations to be displayed on Esri maps.

Dong Energy, a leading renewable energy group headquartered in Denmark, has been an early adopter of the PI Integrator for Esri ArcGIS. The company estimates it will be operating more than 1,800 offshore wind turbines by 2020. The PI Integrator will produce improved situational awareness and potentially reduce unscheduled visits, resulting in a reduction of Operational Expenditure (OPEX) costs of up to 20 million euros per year. Through remotely monitoring and viewing wind turbine, and wind and wave conditions alongside service personnel location, Dong Energy is able to determine who, where, and when to deploy resources for minimizing turbine downtime.

“Working offshore can be a challenging environment   and 15 times more expensive than working onshore,” said Anders Røpke,   lead data architect at Dong Energy. “Asset integrity improvements   through remote monitoring will   safeguard high health and safety standards and reduce OPEX costs.”

The newly released capabilities of the PI Integrator for Esri ArcGIS allow seamless, real time streaming of operational data with geographical context. This information provides an intuitive view of the operational landscape that enables immediate, location-aware, actionable decisions. It also enables improved operational planning, proactive asset management, asset tracking, reporting, and regulatory compliance.

“When assets are geographically dispersed or mobile, merging space and time dimensions to visualize operational data has immense benefits for making real time decisions,” said Martin Otterson, senior vice president of sales, marketing, and industry at OSIsoft. “Interpretation of data becomes intuitive and facilitates faster decision making, which is critical in time-sensitive applications such as health, safety, environmental monitoring, production facilities, or high-energy demand operations.”

The integrated geography-time perspective significantly improves situational awareness and exposes patterns in operational performance issues that might otherwise go undetected. Asset performance can be tracked in real time and across geographies, and it can be used to improve resource utilization through optimum planning for allocations and dispatches, condition monitoring, and preventive maintenance. Asset tracking also increases safety of operations.

“Organizations that arm employees and management with a more complete, synchronized view of their operations have a distinct advantage and benefit from instant impact,” said Chris Cappelli, director of sales at Esri. “Our customers want to work better and smarter. Esri and OSIsoft have taken that to heart and partnered to link these two critical enterprise platforms.”
