ArcMap is an application within ArcGIS Desktop (ArcInfo, ArcEditor, and ArcView). ArcMap generates labels dynamically so when you pan and zoom around a map, ArcMap continually adjusts label positions for all labels on the map in an attempt to fit them most efficiently in the available space. Redrawing and repositioning labels takes time and can effect performance.
Once label locking has been applied, only labels in the current extent when locking was applied will be drawn. |
Performance can be improved by preventing ArcMap from drawing labels outside the area of the map where you are currently working. Do this by locking the labels temporarily. When you apply label locking, ArcMap will not draw labels outside the current extent.
Use the Label Locking button, one of the tools for managing labels available from the ArcMap Labeling toolbar, to toggle label locking off and on. Once locking has been applied, only labels in the current extent when locking was applied will be drawn. Visit www.esri.com/support for additional tips on labeling in ArcGIS Desktop.
