ArcGIS Goes Mobile

ArcGIS Mobile allows users to build and deploy mobile GIS applica-tions that can run on a variety of mobile devices.

Esri offers a comprehensive suite of mobile GIS products designed for various application and platform requirements. These include out-of-the-box solutions, such as ArcPad, as well as developer toolkits, such as the newest addition to the Esri mobile GIS family, called ArcGIS Mobile.

Easy-to-Use Developer Tools

ArcGIS Mobile is a software developer kit (SDK) in ArcGIS Server that allows developers to create centrally managed, highly customized, and easy-to-use mobile applications that are tailored to an organization's specific needs and workflow. ArcGIS Mobile provides a set of .NET controls for synchronizing, caching, and displaying GIS data on mobile devices, as well as for navigating the map and integrating GPS into the mobile workflow. In addition, the SDK provides the functionality to edit workgroup and enterprise geodatabase layers, nonversioned and versioned databases, geometry, and attributes.

Perform Live Data Editing in the Field

The small-footprint applications that users create can synchronize directly with the geodatabase while connected in the field, enabling both office and field personnel to work with updated information almost instantly. When unable to connect to the server, users can store edits in a mobile map cache until they are ready for synchronization. Having timely access to frequent updates allows for increased efficiency, as well as better analysis and decision making in both small and large organizations.

Optimization for Mobile Devices

ArcGIS Mobile applications use maps that are authored in ArcGIS Desktop and published as map resources with ArcGIS Server. ArcGIS Server then allows synchronizing and distributing geographic information to a large number of users on a range of supported mobile device platforms. Microsoft .NET Compact Framework 2.0 must be installed on devices to run the applications. The SDK has been optimized to provide a small footprint (approximately 500 kilobytes) that allows developers to choose from a range of deployment strategies. For example, businesses can deploy applications through traditional methods, like copying and pasting, using synchronization software, such as Microsoft ActiveSync, or they can deploy them over cellular or wi-fi networks.

ArcGIS Mobile provides

  • Simple developer tools to create mobile applications customized to users' needs
  • The ability to operate in a connected or disconnected environment, allowing updates to be made on the server in near real time
  • Application deployment to various devices that run Windows Mobile or Desktop technologies, including smartphones, Pocket PCs, and Tablet PCs

Increase the Value of GIS Data

ArcGIS Mobile also features the ability to add geospatial capabilities to existing line-of-business applications, including customer relationship management and field service automation systems, thus optimizing the investment in GIS. ArcGIS Mobile is an SDK installed as part of ArcGIS Server for the .NET Framework.
