Map Viewer Classic Roadmap for Retirement

By Phoebe Gelbard and Eva Moyer

Map Viewer Classic is officially deprecated and will be removed from ArcGIS Online upon its retirement in Q1 of 2026. This blog includes information about the deprecation process and provides additional resources to support you as you migrate your workflows.

Here are the key dates to keep in mind:

  • ArcGIS Enterprise: ArcGIS Enterprise 11.5 will be the last version to include Map Viewer Classic. Please see the ArcGIS Enterprise product lifecycle.
  • ArcGIS Online: As of Q1 2025, users of new organizations, trials, and public accounts will not be able to open content in Map Viewer Classic from the item page, app launcher, or any other page in ArcGIS Online, such as Gallery or Content. For existing organizations, Map Viewer Classic will no longer be available as of the Q1 2026 update of ArcGIS Online.

What does it mean for Map Viewer Classic to be deprecated? When did this happen?

Map Viewer Classic has been deprecated since Q2 2023. Since then, no new features or capabilities have been added to Map Viewer Classic, and there have only been maintenance fixes. Refer to the timeline below for more information about the milestones between deprecation and retirement for Map Viewer Classic.

Map Viewer Classic was deprecated at Q2 2023 in ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise and will be retired at Q1 2026.

Why is Map Viewer Classic being retired?

Map Viewer Classic is built on the 3.x version of the ArcGIS API for JavaScript, which was retired in July 2024. Map Viewer, built on ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript 4.x, features a modern design with fast, client-side performance, improved interactivity (such as instant filtering results), and more flexibility than ever. Additionally, Map Viewer offers new tools and features, such as smart mapping styles and improved customization options, enhancing the overall mapping capabilities available to users.

In Map Viewer, you can combine blend modes with effects to fine-tune the appearance of a map.

What will happen on the retirement date? Will I be able to access my maps after the retirement date?

As of Q1 2025, users of new organizations, trials, and public accounts will not be able to open content in Map Viewer Classic from the item page, app launcher, or any other page in ArcGIS Online, such as Gallery or Content. Users of these accounts will also not be able to select Map Viewer Classic as their primary map viewer. Upon retirement in Q1 2026, Esri will discontinue software support and technical support for Map Viewer Classic. You will no longer be able to create maps with Map Viewer Classic, and maps previously saved in Map Viewer Classic will automatically be accessible from Map Viewer.

What about the apps I’ve created with Map Viewer Classic maps? Will they continue to work after retirement?

In advance of the Map Viewer Classic retirement, you should identify any workflows presently using Map Viewer Classic, such as those saved in ArcGIS Web AppBuilder apps, and proactively consider Map Viewer and other apps such as ArcGIS Experience Builder, ArcGIS Instant Apps, ArcGIS StoryMaps, and ArcGIS Dashboards as alternatives. Refer to the app-specific documentation to learn more about how Map Viewer Classic interfaces with each app.
