When it comes to working with data, sometimes getting started is the most challenging part. As a fellow GIS learner, educator, and data-curious individual, I find that having a common foundation for approaching complex topics is important.
The Learn essential demographic data skills tutorial series is designed to provide you with this foundation while helping you take the first steps toward navigating the global collection of data that Esri Demographics offers. This blog article will guide you through what you can expect to explore in this tutorial series.
What will you learn?
Over the course of four stories and one tutorial, you’ll dive into the basics of demographic and spatial data:
- What data is and how to distinguish between data, variables, and layers
- How to use ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World and the data browser to explore demographic data
- When to use vector and raster data in the context of demographic data analysis
- Geography levels and how geographic boundaries enable you to visualize demographic data
- Spatial data exploration by mapping populations to inform business decisions
How can you access this tutorial series?
Whether you are new to the world of data and GIS or someone who works with data every day, this series is for you. For students, professionals, and individuals hoping to learn skills for working with data, this series will provide you with a foundation from which to build and grow.
Every story within the series is free to access without an ArcGIS subscription, including links to additional stories, the data browser, and ArcGIS Living Atlas as well as embedded maps with layers that you can turn on and off.
There are also links to supplemental tutorials that provide pathways for further learning (which I hope you will explore!), though some of these require an ArcGIS Online subscription. Don’t have an ArcGIS account? Create an ArcGIS account to access these resources.
What’s the story behind this series?
When I first set out to create a new series for current and future Esri Demographics users, I found myself wishing that I had a road map directing me to all the resources available for working with this collection of global data.
As a new-to-Esri-Demographics user, I want this information to be straightforward and approachable to you at any point in your journey. The path to creating this series has been an adventure in itself, and I’m excited to share my newfound knowledge of layers, data types, and geographies if you’re along for the ride.
There are as many pathways for applying your GIS learning as you have room for in your imagination. I hope that this series sparks your curiosity in working with spatial data to engage with your community and to share insights and stories about the people, places, and spaces that are meaningful to you.
