India has long adopted modern remote-sensing and GIS technologies for various development projects. Today, it recognizes that empowering its citizens and modernizing governance are urgently needed for future nation building. In support of this national goal, India is set to establish a next-generation GIS—a National GIS—that empowers its citizens, enhances efficiency in governance, and supports an inclusive social and economic order. Dovetailed into this larger vision of National GIS, the state of Karnataka has envisioned its statewide GIS subplatform. India is looking at innovative GI policies by which such authoritative and updated GIS data and a wide range of applications would become possible.
