Exploring the Use of GIS by the US National Park Service
REDLANDS, Calif.—April 20, 2021—Esri, the global leader in location intelligence, today announced the publication of Mapping America’s National Parks: Preserving Our Natural and Cultural Treasures.
Written by staff at the US National Park Service (NPS), Mapping America’s National Parks showcases a selection of maps used for managing parks effectively, including ensuring public safety, protecting natural and cultural resources, working with communities and partners, and planning for fire. The common thread of these maps is the research and science underpinning the data they depict, as well as the use of geographic information system (GIS) technology to meet the NPS mission:
[To] conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wildlife therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations
To achieve this mission, the NPS relies heavily on maps not only to assist visitors with orientation and navigation but also to tell interpretive stories about things not readily apparent, thus connecting the intangible to the tangible.
Mapping America’s National Parks includes a foreword by filmmaker Ken Burns and writer Dayton Duncan, authors of the book The National Parks: America’s Best Idea and creators of the documentary film of the same title.
Mapping America’s National Parks is available in print (ISBN: 9781589485464, 304 pages, US$39.99) and as an e-book (ISBN: 9781589485471, US$39.99).
