Esri Publishes the Workbook Getting to Know ArcGIS Pro

This is Esri’s first workbook for ArcGIS Pro, a powerful, project-based professional GIS desktop application with a modern ribbon interface.

Redlands, California—The new workbook Getting to Know ArcGIS Pro teaches the the fundamentals of making 2D and 3D maps and analyzing geospatial data using the next generation of geographic information system (GIS) software: the Esri ArcGIS Pro application.

This is Esri’s first workbook for ArcGIS Pro, a powerful, project-based professional GIS desktop application with a modern ribbon interface. Available in Esri’s ArcGIS for Desktop collection of applications, ArcGIS Pro was designed for users to quickly author maps and create, edit, query, visualize, and analyze geospatial data in both 2D and 3D environments. Since the application can be used to make and share web maps, such as 3D web scenes, readers also use ArcGIS Online throughout this workbook.

Readers can follow the exercises in the book’s 10 chapters to learn the basic functions and capabilities of ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Pro. They can, for example, create a web map in ArcGIS Online; do basic tasks in ArcGIS Pro, such as start a new project; convert a 2D map into a 3D map; create and edit spatial data; create a geoprocessing model; run a Python command and script tool; prepare a geodatabase and a map for data collection; geocode location data; perform hot-spot analysis; apply symbology and label features; create a page layout; and share a project. Data for completing the exercises is available to download.

The workbook was designed to give readers an overview of ArcGIS Pro, according to the authors, Michael Law and Amy Collins. "We aim to provide a diverse sampling of industries, scenarios, and workflows that highlight the broad appeal and many core functions [of the application]," they wrote in the book’s preface. "When you complete this book, you should feel comfortable enough with ArcGIS Pro to start working with it on your own." Watch this video for a quick overview of Getting to Know ArcGIS Pro.

Law and Collins also wrote the popular Esri workbook Getting to Know ArcGIS,Fourth Edition, which waspublished in 2015. Law is a cartographer with more than 12 years of professional GIS experience. He has worked for Rand McNally Canada and Esri, where he developed cartography for books and edited and tested GIS workbooks. Collins is a writer and editor who has worked with GIS for 14 years. She is a former technical editor at Esri, where she honed her knowledge of GIS and designed instructional materials for budding GIS professionals.
