Redlands, California—Esri, the premier developer of geographic information system (GIS) software, announces a strategic alliance with MapmyIndia, India’s leading creator of digital maps, data, and location-based services. MapmyIndia will migrate its data production environment to the ArcGIS platform, allowing it to leverage Esri’s high-end cartographic production tools and workflows to expand its range of products.
The data collected by MapmyIndia is extensive, covering all of India’s 600,000 towns and villages, approximately 10 million points of interest, and 1.9 million kilometers of highway and street network. MapmyIndia serves over 80 percent of all automotive navigation systems installed in India and releases data updates every four to six months.
The alliance will provide Indian application developers and end users with a high-performance, cost-effective platform for GIS and location-based services development. In addition Esri’s cloud-based ArcGIS Online will help democratize GIS data access throughout India with its low-cost subscription plans.
"Working with Esri will be truly transformative for the Indian GIS and location-based services industry," says Rakesh Verma, managing director, MapmyIndia (CE Info Systems). "App developers; businesses; government organizations; and, most importantly, end users will be able to experience, interact with the combined platform of Esri technologies and MapmyIndia Maps."
"Migrating its map production to the ArcGIS platform will let MapmyIndia take advantage of Esri’s rich development environment, facilitating, for example, the creation of custom server-based GIS applications or embedding GIS functionality into existing applications,” said Jack Dangermond, Esri President. “This will help the company reduce map production costs and meet data publishing deadlines. In addition, MapmyIndia’s data will power Esri’s geocoding and network services throughout the country.”
Nikhil Kumar, general manager and head of innovative solution business at NIIT GIS Limited (Esri India), said “The comprehensive datasets from MapmyIndia managed on the powerful ArcGIS platform will extend our users an interface for collaboration and sharing and a complete geospatial content management experience."
