The 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026, Its Meaning and Responsibility from the Founders to the Lincoln Presidency

Larry Burgess | Graduate Adjunct Professor, Department of History, University of California, Riverside, and University of Redlands

February 23, 2026 | 5:30 p.m.–6:30 p.m.

The Founding Fathers created and approved a document that has influenced governments around the world and has been viewed throughout history as either beneficial or disruptive. Concepts of fame, posterity, honor, and the equality of humans have been debated ever since.

This presentation will focus on what contemporary Americans may wish to celebrate and reflect upon during the 250th anniversary of this legacy, because of the Declaration of Independence.
