GIS technology has long been valued for enhancing communication and collaboration in decision making, effectively managing resources and assets, enhancing the efficiency of workflows, improving the accessibility of information, and generally offering tangible cost saving to organizations both large and small.

In an effort to deliver geospatial information and functionality throughout an enterprise, organizations are choosing to extend their traditional desktop GIS implementations with innovative server-based GIS solutions that provide content and capabilities via Web services.

Virginia Department of Forestry’s server GIS application makes it possible for field staff to perform complex Web-based editing.

ESRI offers a server-based platform from which geographic knowledge is published and disseminated within organizations, across organizational boundaries, and to the public.

Server-based GIS solutions address many of today’s business needs such as

  • Increased communication and encouragement of collaboration among various organizational departments in support of better decision making.
  • Lower cost of software ownership and increased return on investments through single, focused GIS applications (such as Web applications) that scale to support many users.
  • Integration of GIS functionality with other enterprise systems in an effort to better manage resources and assets.
  • Enhanced workflows with geospatial capabilities to offer greater insights into information, increased efficiency and improved accuracy.
  • Creation and deployment of centrally managed GIS applications and services to support cross-departmental and enterprise requirements.

Implementing server-based GIS solutions must be done in a standards compliant manner. ESRI delivers a comprehensive suite of server-based solutions built on accepted standards that enable organizations to publish and share geographical maps, data, models, and more.
