The application is designed to solve the problems of field data collection related to uncontrolled release of hazardous materials and is designed for frequent use by non-GIS personnel in state environmental agencies."

Mobile Hazardous Oil Spill Response System

The Bureau of Remediation & Waste Management (BRWM) includes the Division of Response Services, whose statewide staff is known as "responders." On a round-the-clock basis, they are the first official representatives on the scene of an oil, hazardous waste, or hazardous materials spill, interacting with up to 2,700 spill events every year.

"Working closely with BRWM, we developed SSTS, an enterprise-wide database and GIS system, giving click to enlargeresponders access to a wide range of hitherto unavailable data, whether in the office or at a spill site. SSTS references existing MDEP data sets and provides more complete and accurate reports than those previously available to concerned parties throughout the system."

"Based on other ways that we could develop this application, using ArcGIS Engine will absolutely be time and cost effective for us. The .NET assemblies are quite useful and a lot of basic map interaction functionality is already programmed for you. We also find the ArcGIS Engine licensing model very attractive."

Stuart Rich, President of SGCI
