ArcExplorer 9.3—Java Edition: Download with Instructions

What you need to install ArcExplorer Java Edition

ArcExplorer can be installed on a Windows 2003, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Linux or UNIX operating system.

How to install ArcExplorer Java Edition or the ArcExplorer Java Edition Web Download on any supported operating system

Note: Installations should not be performed by the root user for security reasons on UNIX/Linux.

If you are pointing to a system JDK/JRE for ArcExplorer Java, please ensure that you have write access to the JDK/jre/lib directory before installing.

Navigate to the appropriate platform specific directory on the ArcExplorer Java Edition CD or the directory where you downloaded ArcExplorer Java Edition from the Web.

Double-click AEJavaSetup.exe (Windows) or run SetupArcExplorer (UNIX/Linux) and follow the onscreen instructions.

Starting ArcExplorer on Windows

After installation, click Start > Programs > ArcGIS > ArcExplorer Java Edition to open ArcExplorer. No additional steps are required.

Setting up your account for UNIX and Linux

ESRI recommends that you execute ArcExplorer from a C shell. The following instructions are for a C shell environment setup.

To use ArcExplorer after installation, add the following lines to your .login or .cshrc file:

setenv JAVA_HOME <path_to_supported_jre> Note: Specify the path to the JRE you selected during the install.
setenv AEJHOME /ArcExplorer
set path = ( $path $AEJHOME/bin $JAVA_HOME $JAVA_HOME/bin )

The next variable differs by platform:

  • Linux/Solaris:
    setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH $LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$JAVA_HOME:$JAVA_HOME/lib
  • AIX:
    setenv LIBPATH $LIBPATH:$JAVA_HOME:$JAVA_HOME/lib
  • HP:
    setenv SHLIB_PATH $SHLIB_PATH:$JAVA_HOME:$JAVA_HOME/lib

To enable the changes, type:
% source <.login or .cshrc>

Editing the user $HOME/aimsclient.properties file

Copy the aimsclient.properties file from the $AEJHOME/Xenv directory to your user $HOME location. Update the value of the WebBrowser key in the aimsclient.properties file to point to the location of your default browser. Update the value of the AEJavaHelp key in the aimsclient.properties file to point to the location of the ArcExplorer online Help files.

Starting ArcExplorer for UNIX and Linux

With $AEJHOME/bin included in your PATH, start ArcExplorer by typing: aejava

Notes

  1. Download Using ArcExplorer—Java Edition [PDF-3.79 MB]. This guide is in Adobe Acrobat format (PDF). You can download the latest Adobe Acrobat Reader from the Adobe Web site at www.adobe.com.
  2. Installation of ArcExplorer 9.3 on Windows requires administrator privileges.
  3. During the installation, files are put in the %TEMP% directory for utility purposes. A %TEMP% variable must be set and the %TEMP% directory should be writable.
