Map Mania
ESRI and its founder and president, Jack Dangermond, are featured in this month’s Forbes magazine. The article discusses how map software has suddenly become hot technology and at the forefront of this boom is the de facto father of the mapping field, Dangermond. In this interview, Dangermond discusses the latest mapping craze and ESRI’s upcoming release of ArcGIS 9.2.

Where 2.0 Conference
Jack Dangermond presented the paper GIS on the Web: Going Beyond Geographic Exploration at the Where 2.0 Conference, June 13–14, in San Jose, California. The conference, which brought together the people, projects, and issues leading the charge into the location-based technology frontier, provided the perfect forum for Dangermond. His session focused on how GIS on the Web is evolving to support true Internet-based GIS services that can be consumed in a variety of applications by numerous users and developers. ESRI also exhibited at, and was a Platinum Sponsor of, the conference.

Louisiana Stamps Out Food Stamp Fraud
eWEEK.com, June 8, 2006—In the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, 500,000 households were added to the list of more than 600,000 already receiving food stamps in the state of Louisiana. However, the State of Louisiana’s Department of Social Services (DSS) estimates that 4 percent of the funds, a total of $40 million, are fraudulently received or trafficked each year. With the help of ESRI’s GIS technology and Information Builders’ business intelligence solutions, the Louisiana DSS now has a solution that spots, and will help eradicate, misuse of the Food Stamp Program.

Tele Atlas and ESRI Offer Scholarships for 2006 ESRI Education User Conference
Tele Atlas and ESRI are providing five educators from the United States and Canada with the opportunity to join more than 600 teachers, school administrators, librarians, and museum professionals at the Sixth Annual ESRI Education User Conference. The scholarships include $400 toward travel costs and complimentary admission to the conference in San Diego, California, August 5–8, 2006.

ESRI Supports National Geographic Society's Campaign to Increase Geographic Knowledge
ESRI is pleased to announce its sponsorship of the National Geographic Society's My Wonderful World program. The campaign, which launched last month, was developed to help promote geographic literacy for students and young adults. The majority of the program is based on the Web site, which features tools that allow parents and family members to take part in the educational process as well as a section specifically for kids.

ESRI Announces North America Street Dataset for RouteMAP IMS 3 Now Shipping
RouteMAP IMS is designed to help users add mapping and routing capabilities to their Web sites. Tele Atlas’ Dynamap Transportation, the latest release of this data pack, provides high-quality, accurate data for Web-based mapping. The dataset includes updated street data, postal boundaries, landmarks, and water features for the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

Taking BI Beyond the Inner Circle to the Front Lines
Computerworld, May 1, 2006—Several business intelligence (BI) users are working on new projects to quickly move BI reports and analysis out to frontline workers, suppliers, and customers. One such user, the Hillman Group, will go live later this year with a new application using ESRI’s GIS tools combined with Information Builders’ WebFocus reporting tool. This application will ensure cost-effective shipping by mapping how the company’s products are shipped.

Reduced Energy Loss
GEO:connexion, June 1, 2006—With the growing demand to back Electricity of Lebanon in its struggle to eliminate exceedingly high levels of network losses, GIS-based studies on the electrical network have highlighted the vicinities with high nontechnical losses to guide inspection crews. The state-run Lebanese electric utility relies on the tracing capabilities of ESRI software to assist significantly in modeling and managing its electrical system infrastructure.
