At the 2008 ESRI Federal User Conference, Tele Atlas announced that some of its data will be used in United States Geological Survey (USGS) map products. ESRI and SAS Implementation Make the Grade in Education
University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill is singing the praises of its GIS. Leaders of this higher education institution have experienced the benefits of a coordinated GIS application to sort, analyze, sometimes view (in the form of spatial maps), and make decisions about institutional data generated from computerized maps, aerial photographs, satellite images, databases, graphs, and other sources. UNC looked to the world leaders in business intelligence and GIS, SAS and ESRI, respectively, for a solution to the university's needs.

Tornado Puts EOC Mapping System to Test
A new computer mapping system installed in the Tallahassee-Leon County, Florida, Emergency Operations Center (EOC) was unexpectedly tested when a tornado hit Capitola, Florida, in early March. The new system, developed by ESRI, was two years in the making, and this tornado provided the first testing opportunity. The old system involved writing the addresses of damaged properties on a whiteboard; this time, addresses were entered in a database and displayed on a map. This allowed for a more coordinated and effective response. The system is scheduled to be fully enabled by the beginning of the hurricane season, June 1.

Plains All American Pipeline Uses ArcGIS Suite of Products to Ensure Smooth Flow of Petroleum Products
As recent as five years ago, Texas-based Plains All American Pipeline was using hard-copy maps to monitor and maintain its 20,000-mile pipeline network. Rapid expansion through acquisitions and mergers presented the challenge of integrating disparate work methods, data sources, and standards. Given the heavily regulated environment of the pipeline industry, the company recognized the need to integrate and standardize its enterprise system. ESRI’s ArcGIS software products were selected for the GIS component of the company’s need, and today, several phases along in the full process of implementing an enterprise solution, Plains All American Pipeline is in a much stronger position to efficiently and effectively monitor its pipelines and petroleum products.
