International Engineering and Construction Contractor Michels Corporation Adopts ESRI ArcGIS Server

GIS Used to Increase Collaboration within Company Divisions and Improve Communication with Customers

Redlands, California—ESRI announces Michels Corporation, Brownsville, Wisconsin, has adopted ESRI ArcGIS Server software to support a wide range of internal operations as well as provide a platform for job tracking by its clients.

Founded in 1960, Michels constructs electrical, telecommunications, and municipal infrastructure, operating a number of subsidiary companies throughout the United States.

The company has used ESRI geographic information system (GIS) technology for several years. When Michels began looking for a way to improve interdivisional communication as well as interaction with its customers, GIS was again considered. Using ESRI’s ArcGIS Server, Michels is able to more easily interact with clients.

"ArcGIS Server is another valuable tool that will help Michels maintain our standard of operational excellence," states Pat Michels, CEO, Michels. "We are excited in how this technology will help Michels plan and execute projects for our customers. We also view our use of GIS technology as an important step in enabling Michels to be more collaborative in our interactions with our customers. All in all, GIS is the future, and we are very certain that our use of this technology will benefit Michels in how we can better serve our customers."

ESRI GIS software has been used throughout the company to assist in asset management including real estate holdings, property leases, and local and state permits. GIS is also used to better communicate with clients who also use the technology for utility infrastructure planning, design, and bidding. Doug Heider, OSP/GIS manager in Michels' engineering division, uses GIS for design and management of information for third-party clients including telecommunication companies nationwide.

Michels is planning to use ArcGIS Server as a market distinguisher, providing map Web services to exchange project information with customers and improve operational efficiencies and organizational communications.

ArcGIS Server is a complete and integrated server-based GIS. It offers a low cost of ownership through centrally managed, focused GIS applications that can scale to support many users. It allows browser-based access to GIS and integrates with other enterprise systems such as customer relationship management (CRM) or enterprise resource planning (ERP) using industry-standard software. ArcGIS Server provides the foundation to enable a geospatial service-oriented architecture (SOA).

"Michels is a real leader and innovator in the construction marketplace," says Andrew Bieber, ESRI. "The adoption of ArcGIS Server is a natural evolution for a company that has been successfully implementing the technology throughout the organization. ArcGIS Server will allow it to realize its vision quickly and efficiently."
