New ESRI Press Books Deliver Strong Grounding in GIS, Spatial Data, and Mapmaking

Redlands, California—Eight new books from ESRI Press help you advance your geospatial education, including learning how to draw intricate topographic maps, using geographic information systems (GIS) to analyze your business's market potential, and planning a GIS.

This summer's titles also tackle topics such as spatial data infrastructures, present a new data model for marine science, and offer a tutorial in ESRI's ArcView 9 software. A new volume of the popular ESRI Map Book showcases some of the most beautiful, informative, and interesting maps created using GIS.

"The books will appeal to people with a broad range of interests and different GIS skill levels, from the novice to the expert," said Judy Hawkins, manager of ESRI Press. For example, GIS Tutorial for Marketing will be a valuable volume for business professionals who are conducting their business and marketing analysis and planning.

This tutorial teaches how GIS can be used to analyze potential sites for new stores, study buying behaviors of households, manage sales territories, and more. And Dr. Roger Tomlinson's Thinking About GIS: Geographic Information System Planning for Managers, Third Edition serves as a consummate planning manual for organizations that want to launch a GIS, she said.

The new books that will be published include

  • ESRI Map Book, Volume 22 (ISBN 978-1-58948-172-5, 120 pages, $24.95). Discover creative ways to use GIS by paging through this beautifully illustrated book showcasing more than 100 full-color digital maps. Selected from submissions to the Map Gallery at the 26th ESRI International User Conference, these maps manifest how GIS helps people visualize, analyze, and understand geographically referenced information. "The maps in this book provide evidence of how GIS applications are helping to successfully describe and model many aspects of geographic knowledge about the world," ESRI president Jack Dangermond says.
  • Thinking About GIS: Geographic Information System Planning for Managers, Third Edition (ISBN 978-1-58948-158-9, 238 pages, $24.95). Learn how to plan a GIS from the ground up, using a 10-stage methodology developed by Dr. Roger Tomlinson, widely recognized as the Father of GIS. The book walks organizations through every step including writing information product descriptions and conducting a cost-benefit analysis.
  • ArcMarine: GIS for a Blue Planet (ISBN 978-1-58948-017-9, 216 pages, $47.95). Dive in and explore the new data model marine researchers developed to support seafloor mapping, fisheries management, marine mammal tracking, shoreline change monitoring, and water temperature analysis. Along with providing structure to storing and analyzing marine data, the data model teaches GIS software users how to create maps and three-dimensional scenes of the marine environment to help make important decisions. This book is a "must have" reference for academic, government, military, and private oceanographers; resource managers; conservationists; geographers and nautical archaeologists; and marine science students.
  • GIS Tutorial Workbook for ArcView 9, Second Edition (ISBN 978-1-58948-178-7, 374 pages, $69.95). Learn to use ArcView software with this practical study guide, which combines ArcGIS tutorials and self-study exercises that begin with the basics and progress to more advanced lessons. Readers will learn to create maps, collect data, use geoprocessing tools, and create models for advanced analysis. The authors include scripted exercises, assignments that pose real-world problems, and Your Turn exercises that require users to work without step-by-step instructions. The book comes with a DVD that includes a 180-day trial of ESRI's ArcView 9.2 software and a CD with data to complete the tutorials, assignments, and case studies.
  • Research and Theory in Advancing Spatial Data Infrastructure Concepts (ISBN 978-1-58948-162-6, 308 pages, $24.95). Get insights into the possible directions spatial data infrastructures (SDIs) may be headed in this scholarly tome penned by Professor Harlan J. Onsrud, president of the Global Spatial Data Infrastructure Association. Onsrud delves into the technical, legal, economic, and institutional challenges of SDIs, defined as the spatial data, metadata, technology, standards, policies, and people needed to promote data sharing in the public or private sector. The research analyzes models for planning, financing, and implementing SDI initiatives and assesses the extent to which SDI projects in Australia, the European Union, India, and East Timor are contributing to economic competitiveness and social well-being.
  • Cartographic Relief Presentation (ISBN 978-1-58948-026-1, 420 pages, $59.95). Turn to this latest translation of the late Eduard Imhof's masterpiece on cartographic relief representation to learn techniques on how to properly render terrain in maps. A respected Swiss cartographer who died in 1986, Imhof hoped that this comprehensive guide—including his artistic and instructive illustrations—would improve the quality of future mapmaking.
  • GIS Tutorial for Marketing (ISBN 978-1-58948-079-7, 420 pages, $69.95). Learn to conduct market area analysis with ArcGIS Desktop using this tutorial aimed at business and marketing students and professionals. The industry-specific software manual teaches people how to use ArcGIS Desktop 9.2 software to solve vital business and marketing problems. Nine scenario-based tutorials provide step-by-step instructions for using GIS in areas such as marketing segmentation, customer profiling, promotional planning, selecting sites for stores, and managing sales territory. The book includes two CDs. One is a 180-day trial of ArcGIS 9.2 software, including extensions, and the other is a data CD with Microsoft Word report templates, tutorial datasets, and samples of ArcGIS Business Analyst and Community Tapestry data.
  • Building European Spatial Data Infrastructures (ISBN 978-1-58948-165-7, 91 pages, $24.95). Get a better understanding of what needs to be accomplished to build a spatial data infrastructure in this nontechnical book written by Ian Masser, an SDI expert. The author also shows how Europeans are using geographic information technologies to give their citizens quick access to location-based information and are creating a multinational system of sharing information throughout the European Union.
