In the municipality of Ponce, one of the requirements for a development permit is to provide both topographic contours and parcels in the same coordinate system and in a vector format that can be imported on the GIS. When the developer submits the information, the topography is analyzed and areas to be protected are delineated.
This process ensures compliance with one of Ponce's rules that prohibits development on areas with a slope greater or equal to 25 percent. Slopes in Ponce are problematic because, in combination with the geology and soil type, landslides can occur.
