The Well Locations for Riyadh City

These maps of the wells in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, were created for the Ministry of Agriculture and Water (MAW). The MAW compiled a spatial database from field surveys using a global positioning system (GPS) and an Access database with descriptive information about all the wells in Riyadh. Linking the databases along with satellite imagery of the area to a GIS enables the MAW to accurately locate wells and retrieve up-to-date information about them.

Researchers at the MAW use these maps, which can be printed at various scales, to monitor historical information about the wells, assess future water needs, and plan for new wells.

Renew Old Maps

This map was part of a series produced to replace maps from the Ministry of Petroleum that were made in 1975. The old paper maps were scanned; the data was converted from raster to vector and combined with satellite imagery. King Abdul Aziz City for Science and Technology provided a triangulated irregular network coverage and added contours to the areas.
