2008 ESRI Survey & Engineering GIS Summit

Build New Opportunities
Discover how you can enhance core business practices and expand opportunities with cutting-edge technology. Join more than 400 surveyors, engineers, and GIS professionals at the 2008 ESRI Survey & Engineering GIS (SEG) Summit, August 2-5, in San Diego, California. Attending the conference will give you the opportunity to hear from leading experts, get up close and personal with GIS technology, and learn about applications and solutions that can impact your business development. Register and learn more about the 2008 SEG Summit.

Tour the MAPS Showcase
Concluding the SEG Summit, we invite you to visit the Map, Chart, & Data Production and Spatial Data Infrastructure (MAPS) Showcase at the ESRI International User Conference to see how survey organizations and national mapping agencies leverage survey data as the foundation of their GIS. The MAPS Showcase will feature 6,000 square feet of user exhibits related to topographic mapping, hydrographic and aeronautical charting, spatial data infrastructure, remote sensing, and surveying. Read more.

Show Us Your Projects
The ESRI survey and engineering industry team is looking for images and screen shots from surveyors and civil engineers using GIS. Your submissions will be featured at the summit. Please send your submissions to dbarnes@esri.com by May 23, 2008.

Industry News

Support GIS by Supporting GLIS
The Geographic and Land Information Society (GLIS) brings together the two professions of land surveying and GIS to ensure the integrity and reliability of data and the resultant uses of large-scale land information systems. Furthermore, GLIS is dedicated to encouraging the appropriate use of surveying and mapping technologies in the development and use of geographic and land information systems. As a member organization of ACSM and a regular presenter at the SEG Summit, GLIS shares a common goal with the ESRI Surveying-Special Interest Group (S-SIG). Through education programs, conferences, presentations, and technical sessions, check out how GLIS is strengthening the synergy between the GIS and land surveying professions. Read more.

Realign a City Cadastre Using ArcGIS Survey Analyst
David VanPelt, GIS project manager for the City of Encinitas, California, said it best when he explained, "The cadastral maps of the past were not created with the degree of care and precision that is required in today's environment." The 22-square-mile coastal town recently addressed the spatial inaccuracies in its cadastre by updating its GIS basemap and cadastral layers using the technology provided in ArcGIS Survey Analyst. When the project is completed, Encinitas will continue to rely on the tools and workflow in Survey Analyst to strengthen its cadastral fabric and keep its aerial photography and infrastructure GIS layers aligned. Make Better Maps with the Mapping Center
At the annual ACSM conference held in Spokane, Washington, March 4-9, 2008, ESRI conducted a hands-on workshop where participants had a chance to test drive GIS technology with real-world data. The class focused on GIS fundamentals, and students reviewed definitions and watched instructor-led presentations. After completing a self-guided map project, participants were introduced to the new ESRI Mapping Center. The free resource helps users maker better maps with ArcGIS software and provides solutions-based instructions and downloads as well as user-oriented tips and tricks for mapmaking.

Use GIS to Study the Past
The methodology of historic GIS has emerged as a promising new way to study the past. Placing History: How Maps, Spatial Data, and GIS Are Changing Historical Scholarship is a new book that presents case studies and essays on key issues involving the use of GIS software and allied geospatial methods for historic research. The book helps bring the past to life in case studies for events such as the Dust Bowl and the Battle of Gettysburg and aims to inspire professionals in history-related fields to think geographically about the past.

Import GIS Data with Pen and Paper
Advances in mobile GIS technology have made it easier than ever for accurate data to be collected in the field and efficiently managed and analyzed in the office with little editing or geoprocessing required. There are several data collector options but none as unique as Capturx for ArcGIS Desktop, the industry's first enterprise-ready digital pen and paper software solution. Created by Adapx as an extension of ArcGIS 9.2, Capturx for ArcGIS Desktop uses a digital pen and digital paper to create features and annotations in ArcMap. With Capturx you can create, import, edit, share, and act on paper-based data in your GIS geodatabase by simply writing on an ArcGIS printed map. See how field engineers at Freese and Nichols are using Capturx for ArcGIS Desktop to improve collaboration, lower operational costs, and collect data in the field.

Get Ready-to-Use Census Data
Now available for download, the Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (TIGER)/Line shapefiles can be used to provide the digital map base for a GIS and require no geoprocessing or conversion. TIGER/Line shapefiles are extracts containing selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File (MAF)/TIGER database. Spatial data for geographic features, such as roads, railroads, rivers, and lakes, as well as legal and statistical geographic areas are included in the shapefiles. Features such as name, type of feature, address ranges, and geographic relationship to other features are also included. Read more.

Cadastral Fabric Data Model Poster

Pin Up the Newest Data Model
Introduced in ArcGIS Survey Analyst 9.2, the cadastral fabric is a topologically integrated geodatabase dataset designed to store a continuous parcel fabric that covers a jurisdiction as well as survey-based subdivision plans without loss of any information in the original survey record. The new Cadastral Fabric Data Model poster depicts the dataset tables and relationships by defining a cadastral fabric dataset in great detail. Download the poster.
