Analysis is the process of deriving meaning from data and information and converting information into intelligence. Data can be analyzed to provide leads in investigations, present hypotheses, or predict future crime patterns. In each instance, data about place is key.

GIS tools and technology can inform and enhance intelligence assessments by leveraging location information. They can guide and focus analysis, identifying organized threats and supporting everything from gang enforcement and interdiction to monitoring and capturing terrorist cells and networks. By linking known offenders and suspects and their associates, then tying them to a specific geographic area, public safety officials can take swift action before a threatened event occurs.
