GIS for Marine and Coast

Map Book Gallery

The Map Book Gallery features the ESRI Map Book series dedicated to acknowledging the important and innovative accomplishments of GIS users around the world.

Volume 22: GIS—The Geographic Approach

Seafloor Morphology and Selected Features between the Coastline and the Santa Lucia Escarpment, Central CaliforniaSeafloor Morphology and Selected Features between the Coastline and the Santa Lucia Escarpment, Central California —Geologic mapping of the seafloor in a GIS environment is being used to characterize the surface and subsurface geologic framework of the central California coastal region.

Volume 21: GIS—Communicating Our World

Nuances of the Law of the Sea Implementation Affecting Ocean Research and Activities—South China is a highly contentious area of the world with regard to maritime claims and boundaries. Long straight baselines connecting offshore islands are very common (e.g., Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia).

Volume 20: GIS—Helping Manage Our World

Exploration and Mining in the Coastal and Marine Environment, Namibia—Because the Namibian economy depends to a large degree on mining and fishing, it is increasingly important to monitor the activities of these sectors with a view toward sustainable development. The South African Development Community (SADC) Mining Sector Environmental Subcommittee, which is chaired by Namibia through its Geological Survey, has the mission to coordinate the development of an environmentally friendly mining sector according to the SADC Mining Sector Program of Action.

Volume 19: GIS—The Language of Geography

Using GIS for Data Integration and Visualization of a Deepwater Ocean Observatory—Six years of annual visits to the New Millennium Observatory (NeMO) at Axial Volcano in the northeast Pacific have provided the interdisciplinary science team with a large amount of data to manage. Each year a cruise report is compiled including dive logs and maps, sample and experiment information, and discipline summaries. Maps can be created using a variety of programs, and the GIS user can query the database in several ways.

National Oil Spill Contingency Plan for Cameroon—Vegetation Map— Following the recent construction of the 1,000-kilometer Chad–Cameroon oil pipeline, CSIR was commissioned by the World Bank to prepare a National Oil Spill Contingency Plan for Cameroon. Using Landsat 7 ETM+ satellite imagery, a map of the coastal vegetation of Cameroon was prepared as the basis for determining environmental sensitivity. Other ecological factors and geomorphological and socioeconomic criteria also informed the sensitivity analysis. The vegetation map is also a useful tool for general coastal zone management.

Volume 18: Geography and GIS—Serving Our World

Underwater recovery

Planning Underwater Recovery With GIS
GIS enables review of data contributing to a cost-effective, successful search. To improve the odds of success, multiple wrecks can be targeted if they can be combined into one at-sea activity. In this example, two target wrecks lay in approximately 50 meters of water. The World War II vintage British warships Repulse and the Prince of Wales were sunk on December 10, 1941, by the Japanese.

Volume 17: Geography and GIS—Sustaining Our World

Marine conservation

Marine Ecoregional Planning at The Nature Conservancy—Running the SITES Algorithm to Construct a Marine Conservation Portfolio
The Nature Conservancy of Washington is currently working on the Willamette Valley/Puget Trough/Georgia Basin ecoregion to identify marine and terrestrial areas that capture viable examples of native species and habitats.

Published annually, each volume of the ESRI Map Book showcases a small portion of the work presented at the Map Gallery exhibition at the annual ESRI International User Conference.
