The Internet and local and wide area networks (LANs and WANs) have opened the door to the rapid sharing of information across the office and around the globe. The impact and implications for schools are becoming visible via the brisk spread of Internet access across school districts and the range of uses to which networking technology is put.

Basic public information services can be distributed in new ways by adding the spatial dimension. This includes the demands of recent education initiatives such as student test scores and school accountability.
