Volume 22: GISThe Geographic Approach
The Asia Pacific Natural Hazards and Vulnerabilities Atlas Recognizing that natural disasters are predominantly local issues, often with national, regional, or global impacts, the Pacific Disaster Center has developed the Asia Pacific Natural Hazards and Vulnerabilities Atlas.
Volume 21: GISCommunicating Our World
Calculating Wildfire Hazard LevelsAlgebraic Raster Construction Using Spatial Analyst
ArcGIS Spatial Analyst was used to develop a raster grid layer predicting degrees of wildfire hazard levels within a western Colorado fire management zone. Colorado's West Zone wildfire management agencies tested electronic and paper versions of the project to anticipate fire behavior, safety concerns, and resource allocations during the 2005 wildfire season.
Volume 20: GISHelping Manage Our World
Sales Territory Alignment—Single District
The purpose of this analysis was to realign a sales organization with respect to the volume of sales expected in the area. Zip codes were assigned values based on customer sales within them. The reorganization optimally distributed expected sales potential.
Volume 19: GISThe Language of Geography
Modeling Typhoon Risk in South Korea
South Korea is the seventh largest insurance market in the world. Premiums as a percentage of the gross domestic product reached 10 percent for life and 3.2 percent for nonlife insurance in 2000.
Statistics predict that at least one typhoon will strike the Korean peninsula each year during August. Because of the high market penetration in South Korea, more sophisticated risk analysis is needed to determine typhoon risk. Learn more and see all the maps.
Volume 18: Geography and GISServing Our World
Maps From Applied Geographics Map Publication Practice
Applied Geographics designed and produced maps of downtown Washington, D.C. as well as Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts. The maps detail commercial and government buildings and were produced for Spaulding & Slye Colliers International for use in its marketing and corporate identity efforts.
Volume 17: Geography and GISSustaining Our World
San Francisco Bay AreaEstimated Ground Shaking
These maps visualize ground motion for three scenario earthquake events in a 14-county study region around the San Francisco Bay area. The maps, created by FEMA HAZUS, were used to estimate deaths, debris magnitudes, and property and business interruption losses.
Volume 16: GeographyCreating Communities
Risk Maps
These maps, created by Risk Management Solutions Inc., show catastrophic risk in the United States as well as flood risk in Europe. The four most costly insured hazards in the United States are earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, and hailstorms. In Europe, floods are the most costly natural disaster.
Flood Insurance Policy Locations
This Flood Insurance Policy Locations map shows where flood insurance policies were purchased in relation to the location of the special flood hazard area (SFHA) and demonstrates the effectiveness of the flood zone education campaign promoted by the city of Lakewood, California.
The Map Book Gallery features the ESRI Map Book series dedicated to acknowledging the important and innovative accomplishments of GIS users around the world.
Published annually, each volume of the ESRI Map Book showcases a small portion of the work presented at the Map Gallery exhibition at the annual ESRI International User Conference.
