ESRI User Conference 2001 Cave and Karst Highlights Approximately 11,500 people attended the 21st ESRI User Conference in San Diego in July. Among the specific highlights for cave and karst users: The plenary session included a demonstration of the new capabilities of ArcScene, and featured a 3D fly-through of Hidden River Cave in Horse Cave, KY. Cave survey data for Hidden River Cave was provided courtesy of Dave Foster of the American Cave Conservation Association, and the Cave Research Foundation. Hidden River Cave data is also included with the tutorial sample data for ArcScene. To learn more about ArcScene, visit: www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgisxtensions/3danalyst/ Dr. Michael Goodchild, Director, National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (NCGIA), was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award by Dr. Roger Tomlinson, the "father of GIS." In his acceptance speech, Goodchild recounted how his interest in geography was spawned by a love of caving, and he presented slides of his early caving in West Virginia and his involvement in the discovery and exploration of caves in the Canadian Rockies, including Castleguard Cave. The User Conference featured many workshops and papers on a variety of topics. Of particular interest to cave and karst users was a presentation and poster by Joe Chapa, City of San Antonio, entitled "Saving the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone."
