2002 ESRI International User Conference Cave and Karst Highlights

More than 11,000 people attended the 22nd Annual ESRI International User Conference in San Diego, California. Among the specific highlights for cave and karst users were the following:

The 6th Annual ESRI Cave and Karst User Group meeting was held with approximately 20 people in attendance. The meeting featured a slide presentation of recent cave and karst GIS activities and projects worldwide.

The City of San Antonio received ESRI's Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) award for its use of GIS to protect the recharge area of the Edwards Aquifer in Texas, one of the largest karst aquifers in the world. The project involved the cooperation of a number of other groups and agencies including the Edwards Aquifer Authority and the Texas Speleological Survey. The User Conference featured many workshops and papers on a variety of topics. Of particular interest to cave and karst users were two poster presentations. These were

Journal of Cave and Karst Studies Publishes GIS Issue

The Journal of Cave and Karst Studies, a publication of the National Speleological Society, has published a cave and karst GIS special issue. The issue features 13 papers on various cave and karst GIS applications including archaeology, cave management, and visualization.

Early Announcement--NSS GIS and Digital Mapping Symposium

The 2003 National Speleological Society (NSS) Convention, to be held in Porterville, California, August 4-8, will include a GIS and digital mapping symposium as part of the geology and geography sessions. The symposium will include paper presentations (PowerPoint or slides) and offer special demonstration slots for "how to" or software demonstrations. USGS Learning Web Offers Exploring Caves Section

The Learning Web is a rich, new resource for K-12 teachers and students from the U.S. Geological Survey. It provides online lesson plans, activities, tutorials (some downloadable and printable in .pdf), and links to references dealing with interdisciplinary studies of natural science. The site includes the Exploring Caves section (1-3 level) that covers the basic geology of caves, life habits of cave-dwelling organisms, and cave safety and conservation. Vietnamese-Belgian Karst Project Uses GIS

The VIBEKAP Project, a joint Vietnamese-Belgian project, has been established to foster the development of a coordinated methodology for the assessment and evaluation of a karst system in northwest Vietnam (provinces of Son La and Lai Chau). The project methodology is an interdisciplinary approach utilizing GIS and geological, geomorphological, karstological, hydrological, soil and land use, and remote sensing data.

The September 2002 issue of GISVision, an online GIS publication, includes a special report by Susan Smith reviewing cave and karst GIS activities today. The article covers a variety of applications and highlights work by several national parks and local government agencies.
