ESRI Web Site Now Live

The new ESRI Cave and Karst Web Site is now live. The site is intended as a resource for ESRI Cave and Karst users, and provides links to example applications, tools & utilities, user stories, and a peer-to-peer discussion forum. The site can be found at:
www.esri.com/industries/cavekarst/

Users are encouraged to contribute user stories, tools, tips, tricks and other items to share with others. To submit contact Bernie Szukalski at: bszukalski@esri.com.

Third Annual ESRI Cave and Karst User Group Meeting

The 3rd Annual ESRI International Cave and Karst User Group Meeting will be held during the ESRI User Conference in San Diego. The meeting is scheduled during lunch on Tuesday, June 27. Bring your lunch and join the meeting. Several short presentations will shown, followed by a general discussion. If you would like to make a short presentation at the meeting contact Bernie Szukalski at: bszukalski@esri.com.

New Book on Groundwater Modeling Published

ESRI Press has recently published Hydrologic and Hydraulic Modeling Support with Geographic Information Systems. While not specific to cave or karst problems, the book does provide useful examples, techniques, and insights for applications using spatial input or creating spatial output. The book, edited by Dean Djokic (ESRI) and David Maidment (University of Texas at Austin Center for Research in Water Resources)is a compilation of papers presented at the 1999 ESRI International User Conference on hydrologic and hydraulic water quantity modeling support using GIS.

ESRI Map Book Includes Maps

ESRI yearly publishes a "best of" collection of maps, highlighting excellence in cartography or interesting applications of GIS. This year's Map Book publishes two maps.

"Hidden River Cave and the Longest Cave" was created by Mike Yocum, Director of the Cave Research Foundation GIS Resource Development Program.

The Hidden River Cave maps were produced by CRF's GIS Resource Development Program to celebrate GIS Day 1999. The Mammoth Cave maps illustrate the complexity of passages in Mammoth Cave and their relationship to surface terrain. Contact: myocum@mis.net.

"Environmentally Sensitive Features in Karst Geology Area" was created by Kim Brown, Ken Carr, Brad Chandler, Wendell Farrand, Mike Fonner, Mike Giles, John Hardin, Rich Miller, Mike Rude, Gary Smith, Doug Thomas, and Steve Tomlins of the City of Springfield, Springfield, Missouri.

An analysis determined the regions of the city where on-site wastewater discharge has the highest probability of adversely affecting the groundwater supply. GIS was used to create an environmental impact index to prioritize a 10-year schedule for sewer construction to improve the quality of surface and groundwater. Contact: mike_fonner@springfield.mo.us
