March AAG Meeting to Hold Cave and Karst Panel Session The 2006 meeting of the Association of American Geographers (AAG) will feature a paper session and a panel discussion forum on geographic approaches to cave and karst science. Some of the subjects to be covered include GIS, field techniques, policy, cartography, and hydrology as well as future research within the discipline. Conference participants are encouraged to attend the paper session and contribute to the panel forum. The conference takes place March 711 in Chicago, Illinois. Speaker abstracts and the detailed schedule of these sessions will be available soon. Read more on the AAG Web site. Click here for panel session information. Karst Information Portal Planning Workshop Held The National Cave and Karst Research Institute (NCKRI) hosted a two-and-one-half-day Karst Information Portal (KIP) Planning Workshop in Carlsbad, California, in January that brought together 30 karst researchers, educators, information technology specialists, and land managers. The goal of the Karst Information Portal project is to establish a Web-based global information portal that will serve to link researchers, educators, government agencies, and others interested in karst with current research publications and other information. The project steering committee currently includes NCKRI, New Mexico Tech, the University of South Florida (USF), and the University of New Mexico. For more information, visit the USF KIP Web site. Special Karst GIS and Database Issue from Environmental Geology Planned for 2006 In the past decade, GIS and database management systems (DBMSs) have been widely used to manipulate and manage karst features in karst regions. Several countries have built or have started to build national karst feature databases to enhance data accessibility and resource management. Following the publication of the 2002 Cave and Karst GIS special issue of the Journal of Cave and Karst Studies, Environmental Geology is planning to publish a special issue featuring the application of GIS and DBMS technologies to scientific studies and environmental conservation in karst regions. For more information, visit Eastern Tennessee State University. ESRI Map Book Volume 20 Online The maps in the 20th anniversary issue GIS: Helping Manage Our World explore the theme by illustrating the context of change and what it reveals to help us better manage our future.
