ESRI Data & Maps 2006 Data Update DVD

The ESRI Data & Maps 2006 Data Update DVD includes more than 60 datasets that have been updated from the 2005 media kit. These include updates to the transportation and landmark data from Tele Atlas, updated population for the United States, changes to the Europe basemap data, and updated world population data. In addition, minor corrections and enhancements were made to many of the datasets.

Existing users with current maintenance can request the update at no charge (limited to one copy per customer number).

New Books from ESRI Press

ESRI Press released seven new titles at the 2006 ESRI International User Conference. Descriptions of each can be found at www.esri.com/esripress. Of particular interest to educators are

  • A to Z GIS: An Illustrated Dictionary of Geographic Information Systems
A to Z GIS presents the most comprehensive collection of GIS terms and illustrations to help students, educators, and professionals understand and use the special language of GIS in research, field studies, and real-world applications. With definitions written, developed, and contributed by more than 150 subject matter experts, A to Z GIS includes more than 1,800 terms and nearly 400 full-color illustrations.
  • Charting the Unknown: How Computer Mapping at Harvard Became GIS
Beginning in 1965, a varied collection of planners, geographers, cartographers, mathematicians, computer scientists, artists, and professionals from many other fields converged at the Harvard Laboratory for Computer Graphics and Spatial Analysis to rethink thematic mapping, spatial analysis, and what we would now call geographic information systems. This book explores some of the themes addressed by this fertile interdisciplinary collaboration and includes a CD-ROM packed with information including movies made at the lab, interviews with some key members of the lab, and historical documents.
  • The ESRI/University of Redlands Colloquium CD Set
The Master of Science in Geographic Information Systems (MS GIS) program at the University of Redlands and ESRI annually host a series of colloquia presented by visiting scholars and ESRI staff. Each of the CDs in this set includes a studio-recorded video of the one-hour presentations synchronized with PowerPoint slides on a variety of GIS topics from the 2004–2005 series. Our hope is that this series will be valuable to educators as alternative or supplementary material for lectures and to students wishing to investigate advanced topics.

Free ArcGIS 9.2 Seminars at a Location Near You

ESRI is hosting a series of free seminars to introduce ArcGIS 9.2. ArcGIS 9.2 is a significant release that focuses on improved usability and performance and includes exceptional new features such as

  • A personal ArcSDE Server based on Microsoft SQL Server Express, included with ArcGIS Desktop licenses, allowing you to use ArcSDE without maintaining a separate RDBMS
  • Support for metadata including support for the ISO 19139 standard, the ability to view metadata in ArcMap, and improved metadata services in ArcIMS
  • A free viewer for virtual globes (ArcGIS Explorer) that combines visualization of global 3D data with GIS analysis tools
  • Direct access to Microsoft Excel files

For more information, download the seminar series brochure [PDF-1.27 MB] or proceed directly to online information and select from the state list to register for the seminar in your area.

Featured Site: UNEP GEO Data Portal

The GEO Data Portal is the authoritative source for datasets used by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and its partners. Its online database holds more than 450 different variables at national and regional levels, covering themes such as water, population, forests, emissions, and climate. Data can be displayed as maps, graphs, or tables and can be downloaded in shapefile format.
