ESRI Libraries & GIS NewsNumber 15 - Winter 2005/2006
A.K. Smiley Library Hosts GIS Day Event A.K. Smiley Library in Redlands, California, hosted a GIS Day event on Sunday, November 6, 2005, showcasing a number of geographic information system (GIS) projects being conducted by the city of Redlands, the library’s GIS department, and ESRI. Smiley Library is creating a historical GIS for Redlands, digitizing maps, property information, and other historic documents that trace the development of ESRI’s hometown. The goals of the project are to make the historic information accessible to a broader audience while also aiding in the preservation of the original documents by providing alternative access through the Web. Dalhousie University Opens GIS Center in Killam Memorial Library GIS Day saw the opening of the Dalhousie University GIS Centrethe largest of its type in any Canadian library, by the president, Dr. Tom Traves, who remarked that GIS was a critical approach in educating people about the value of geography. The president was joined by a large crowd of academic administrators, faculty, and students. ESRI Canada Limited presented a student scholarship. Popular demonstrations, poster sessions, and vendor displays helped answer questions about the value of GIS. All staff of the library wore GIS Day gear. There was even a CBC radio interview! Featured Site: Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries Maps Historical county boundaries for several states are available through the Newberry Library’s Web site for the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries Project. Currently, interactive maps are available for California, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Data/Maps for additional states will be made available as the digitization is completed. Introducing Business Analyst Online for Education Business Analyst Online for Education provides demographic data and mapping tools in an easy-to-use Web service, making the power of geographic analysis available to students in any discipline, from business and marketing to public health and social work. No previous experience with mapping or GIS is necessary. Business Analyst Online for Education is designed to streamline demographic analysis by combining data and analysis tools in a seamless package accessed over the Web. Students simply define a study area or a series of areas to compare and choose from a menu of reports that summarizes the population characteristics and lifestyles of the households in those neighborhoods. Business Analyst Online is ideal for business and marketing students but can also be used in any discipline needing demographic analysis including geography, planning and public administration, public health, or sociology. Go to http://bao.esri.com/marketing/freereports/ and enter the promotion code bao4education to get a free report. A customized market profile and site map of your area of interest will be created and sent to you via e-mail. New Books from ESRI Press Think Globally, Act Regionally: GIS and Data Visualization for Social Science and Public Policy Research shows how GIS technology can be applied in beginning social science and public policy research methods courses using ArcView and the ArcGIS Spatial Analyst extension. The book works well as a monthlong module, and the structured exercises using data on an accompanying CD-ROM can be completed in six hours of computer lab time. Part 1 of the book deals with broad themes of urbanization. Part 2 explores themes relating to the balance between the built and natural environments. Part 3 discusses issues of spatial equity and regional integration using GIS and data visualization. Part 4 looks at regional planning in Portland, Oregon. The GIS Guide for Local Government Officials offers practical approaches for incorporating GIS into any size city or county to coordinate resources, save tax dollars, and plan for the future. Case studies drawn from throughout North America illustrate how officials have successfully applied GIS to their specific needs, from monitoring storm drains in Hawaii to fixing potholes in Canada. The editor has compiled the observations of six contributing authors, all with extensive experience in local government management and GIS operations. Other government officials describe in their own words how GIS has become an indispensable tool that enhances communication and promotes efficient management. GIS, Spatial Analysis, and Modeling presents applied, softwarecentric essays about the tools and methods currently available to perform modeling and spatial analysis within a GIS framework. Written by noted experts who have experience modeling within, and linking to, GIS software, this book poses a series of questions in which geography is the pivotal issue: What are the most useful approaches for simulating geographic processes? What software is available to model the dynamics of space and time? And how have spatial analysis and modeling been applied to substantive, real-world problems?
